Suspension & Fine

In Manitoba, it is illegal to use a hand-held electronic device while driving. This includes everything from smartphones and iPods to tablets. Drivers caught violating this law receive three-day licence suspension for a first offence and a seven-day suspension for subsequent offences. Upon conviction, they also receive a $672 fine and move five levels down the Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale. In serious cases, or when other distractions cause you to violate traffic laws or end up in a collision, you could be charged with a number of offences, including careless driving, dangerous driving or criminal negligence. These can result in more severe penalties (including jail time) and other driving interventions. You can also be charged with whatever offence the distraction caused you to commit, such as failing to obey a traffic signal.

Driving Safely

Driving safely moves you up the scale, which saves you money up to 33 per cent savings on vehicle premiums and up to an additional $30 savings on driver’s licence premiums. The highest-risk drivers pay up to $3,000 for their driver’s licence premium.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving means any activity that diverts your attention from the road. Being distracted, even for just a few seconds, is all it can take to cause a fatal crash.
If you are caught, you will receive a three-day licence suspension for a first offence and a seven-day suspension for subsequent offences. Upon conviction, you will also receive a $672 fine and five demerits.

A speeding violation of up to 49 km/h over the posted speed limit moves you down the DSR scale two levels. If you are travelling 50 km/h or more over the limit, the penalty is 10 levels. The safer you drive, the higher you move on the scale and the more money you save. Your position on Manitoba’s 36-level Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale depends on your driving record.

Drive No Insurance

In Manitoba, you must purchase liability, accident benefits and uninsured auto insurance from MPI  You must carry at least $200,000 liability coverage to drive in Manitoba. Driving without insurance in Manitoba it is a traffic offense under MVA 76.1.1 and 226.1. The fine could vary from $5000 to $25000 with a suspension of driver license and they may impound your vehicle.
