Driver Safety Rating

MPI is committed to safer roads. One of the ways we encourage safe driving is through the Driver Safety Rating (DSR) system, which recognizes safe driving behaviour in a fair and simple way. Your position on the DSR scale depends on your driving record. For policies that take effect April 1, 2022, or later, the scale contains 37 levels (up from 36). This includes a new Level 16, as well as increased vehicle premium discounts for levels 10-16. Safe driving has never been so rewarding!

Unsafe Driving

Driving safely moves you up the scale, which saves you money – up to 37 per cent savings on vehicle premiums and up to an additional $30 savings on driver’s licence premiums. Unsafe driving and at-fault claims move you down the scale. The highest-risk drivers pay up to a $3,000 premium on their driver’s licence charge and receive no savings on their vehicle insurance.

How the Scale works

Each year prior to your annual renewal, we’ll send you a notice showing where you are on the scale and what you owe for the next year. We adjust your level on the scale using your previous DSR level and your driving record from the past year. Starting at the base level, each year of safe driving without any vehicle claims and driving convictions or suspensions will move you one level up the scale. This will save you even more on your driver’s licence and vehicle premiums.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving means any activity that diverts your attention from the road. Being distracted, even for just a few seconds, is all it can take to cause a fatal crash.
If you are caught, you will receive a three-day licence suspension for a first offence and a seven-day suspension for subsequent offences. Upon conviction, you will also receive a $672 fine and five demerits.

Speeding

A speeding violation of up to 49 km/h over the posted speed limit moves you down the DSR scale two levels. If you are travelling 50 km/h or more over the limit, the penalty is 10 levels. The safer you drive, the higher you move on the scale and the more money you save. Your position on Manitoba’s 36-level Driver Safety Rating (DSR) scale depends on your driving record.

Driving No Insurance

In Manitoba, you must purchase liability, accident benefits and uninsured auto insurance from MPI  You must carry at least $200,000 liability coverage to drive in Manitoba. Driving without insurance in Manitoba it is a traffic offense under MVA 76.1.1 and 226.1. The fine could vary from $5000 to $25000 with a suspension of driver license and they may impound your vehicle.
